Stress Test Devotional April 29

by David Joynt on April 29, 2024

DEUTERONOMY 6:10a, 12 | 10a When the Lord your God has brought you into the land that he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

12 Take care that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Do you know anyone “born on third base, who is convinced he hit a triple?” As humans, we tend to see ourselves as the heroes of our own stories, and we take too much credit for our success. In so doing, we miss our dependence on God and others. The Israelites had depended on God’s provision in the wilderness and His power at the Red Sea. From small beginnings with one family they had  become a large people because God had blessed them. Here they are warned that in the new land of promise they can be blind to this dependence and give in to feelings of achievement, independence, and self-satisfaction.

We too can forget all the help we have had from family and mentors, all the opportunities God has given us, and the abilities He has bestowed.

Do you ever struggle with a sense of privilege?

Gracious God,

We depend on You for life and breath. You are the source of truth and love, our guide and sustainer. Help us remember this always and every day.

Amen.
