All You Need is Love Daily Devotional -32

by David Joynt on May 12, 2021

1 CORINTHIANS13:7 | Love bears all things, believes all things.

It is important to love truth in order to live it. Sometimes fantasy is more palatable than truth, and it is emotionally easier to accept it, pretending it is real. The human mind is adept at creating multiple realities. Facing the truth about our world, ourselves, our nation, and our culture can take courage—particularly in an age when supporting narratives in an absolute way without questioning has become normal.

Beliefs can only be genuine if they guide our behavior and attitudes. Belief in love, for instance, is widespread, it is a shared public perspective. Most people also hold love dear as a private belief, held internally. Yet all of us engage in unloving acts and speak unloving words and we live in a world of hate, anger, and division. Not to face this is to divorce love and truth and undermine the possibility of both.

How connected are your public, private, and actual beliefs?

Why do you think we have become so defensive about questioning narratives around hard questions like race, immigration, inequality, and justice?
