Easter Hearts, Week 4, Day 5

JOHN 21:9-10 | JOHN 18:15-19, 25-27

Why all these details about a fish fry on the seashore? Why are the final pages of this profound gospel given over to a barbeque? Because this scene corresponds to a previous moment and evokes memories—this time not of courage but cowardice. In John 18, Peter denies Jesus, not before the intense questioning of an assembled court and powerful judge, but three times before a gatekeeping woman and a few servants. The denials take place around a “charcoal fire,” and this word is used only one other time in the NT, to refer to the fire Jesus makes for his breakfast with Peter and the others in John 21.

Jesus makes Peter recall his failures.

Why does Jesus make Peter remember the denials in the courtyard of the High Priest?

FAMILY TIME—

Is it better to face our mistakes or simply move on?
