Faithful, Faith Dreams, Day 31

LUKE 9:1-6, 10 | Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there. Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are leaving that town shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” They departed and went through the villages, bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere. On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with him and withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida.

LUKE 10:1-2 | After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

Jesus’ approach to mission and commission also encourages the faithful dream capacity of his disciples. In Luke 9, Jesus gives his disciples “power and authority” and sends them out to heal and program the Kingdom of God. He had previously begun to call them only in Chapter 5!

It seems too early—they are not ready intellectually or personally— but they are still sent. Why? Jesus knows our tendency to find faults in ourselves and problems in our possibilities. There are always a thousand reasons not to try something.

Why not wait for a better time, a more propitious moment? Why not wait for circumstances to favor our next adventure? Given the choice, many of us will wait and wait and wait. No—Jesus moves his friends forward so they dream without becoming day-dreamers!

During what period of your life did you do the most dreaming? As a child? Prior to college? Before marriage? As a parent?

When did you move the most toward your dreams?
