Advent Week 3: The Way of Return, Day 4

by David Joynt on December 16, 2016

PSALM 25:1-3

A third factor that can drive us to abandon holy plans and purposes is external. Frustration and indignation are internal drivers. But often there is an external one. Joseph found public shame and pressure as a victim of what others would see as Mary's wanton disloyalty. People would gossip and whisper and his reputation would be tarnished. Were he to marry Mary, the celebration would be colored by public disapproval, and the ongoing union might never escape censure. The coming child would be illegitimate with uncertain patrimony. In addition to saving Mary from public disgrace, putting her away quietly would save himself.

Has the prospect of what others will think or say influenced your life decisions?

Should public pressure affect our approach to life decisions?

Notice how honest the Psalmist is about the shame factor.

FAMILY TIME:
When and how has peer pressure influenced your life? What pressure is there at school?
