All You Need is Love Daily Devotional -38

by David Joynt on May 18, 2021

1 CORINTHIANS 13:8| Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.

Do languages pass away? Oh yes. I spent some years studying “dead languages” that are no longer spoken, though they are secretly present in modern ones. Do prophecies end? They do—because they either come to pass or they fail to, and either way they are footnotes in the wake of actual events. Knowledge also has a brief shelf life in many fields. Reading lists for courses change constantly and few works become “classics.” Popular academic fashions shift, authorities wane, and even the “hard sciences” take on new data, because theories are corrigible and facts sacred!     Pandemic science, we have all had to acknowledge, is changing around us because old models are stretched to cover new emerging realities.

Paul loved languages, discerning God’s will and ways, and acquiring knowledge. But he was a realist about all three—are you?
