All You Need is Love Daily Devotional -9

1 CORINTHIANS 13:2a|  2a And if I have prophetic powers…

The ancient world, like the modern one, was fascinated by prophecy. The Delphic oracle was consulted by generals and statesmen before battles and decisions. The myth of the god Apollo conquering the great python who protected the entrance to the underworld, captivated imaginations of the great and the ordinary. Fumes from fissures in the ground were presumed to induce visionary states, where Apollo revealed the future through his prophets and prophetesses.

We too, seek knowledge about the future of the stock market and the economy and try to forecast elections and sporting events. Some resort to horoscopes and tarot cards and psychics.

Biblical prophesy is different. It is about discerning how God is at work in history and what His action means for the present and the future. It operates within a great love story that began with creation, moved toward redemption, and culminates in renewal. The key to the biblical framework for history is Jesus, who presides throughout the stages of the story and whose life, death and resurrection guarantees its outcome.

How much do you think about the future?
