Detecting Christmas December 18 Devotional

by David Joynt on December 18, 2023

MATTHEW 2:1-2 | 1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

Where did the birth occur? Bethlehem, in Judea. But is also began to occur half-way across the world when eastern astronomers observed an actual star moving across the heavens. The magi bring an international element to the Christmas cast. Most births are only of local and familial importance. But this one will soon go global. First the wise men and from Jesus followers will tell of his birth among far flung nations and distant cultures. Jesus never traveled more than 30 miles from his birthplace in his 33 years, yet his name is known and celebrated in more places and cultures from any other.

How many non-American Christians do you know?

Gracious God,

We pray for the church in Africa, in Asia, in Europe, in Latin and South America. We thank you that little Bethlehem was your entry point into history. Amen.
