Detecting Christmas December 19 Devotional

by David Joynt on December 19, 2023

MATTHEW 2:2, 9 | 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was.

Where did the birth occur? It was an event in the lives of the magi, it occurred within their individual stories, altering their trajectory. The wise men were seekers, who started where they were, with specific questions and possibilities. Seekers must always start this way, with what they think they know and with their best questions. Then they must follow the evidence wherever it leads. Seeking takes courage. During Jesus’ life he showed great respect for sincere questioners and never coerced faith. Even committed disciples, if they want to grow, raise questions and seek answers.

Fides quaerens intellectum. Faith seeking understanding.

Are you a seeker? How do you connect science and theology?

Gracious God,

Our knowledge is partial and incomplete. Help us to seek your wisdom and truth with courage and vigor. Amen.
