Divine Imperatives August 15 Devotional

by David Joynt on August 15, 2023

MATTHEW 4:21-22 | 21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

To commit your life to Christ, to become a follower, is an act of     submission and a recognition of a purer and greater authority. But when we submit and relinquish control of our lives, we come under a power that wills our best and is at work, always, in our greatest interest. God in Christ is bringing many children to “glory,” to a state of joy and wholeness quite beyond our comprehension. Since God is our creator, His authority is not alien, but native to our true selves. When we submit, Jesus is inviting us into friendship and into mission too. We not only watch and learn, we participate, and we even lead in His work. James and John both developed in amazing ways in the next three years.

Do you feel empowered by following Christ?

Gracious God,

You are not a God of cold command, a distant field general. You are our dearest companion, calling us to greater reward and a deeper life. Help me remember this.

Amen.
