Divine Imperatives August 19 Devotional

by David Joynt on August 19, 2023

MATTHEW 4:19 | 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.”

A now well established interpretive movement, “missional theology,” stresses the outwardly focused character of the gospels and the rest of the New Testament. Jesus did not promise His first followers that they would become great scholars, although they learned a great deal. He did not lure them with the idea of personal  growth and transformation, even though they did change drastically in their three years with Him. Instead, they promised they would have an impact on others, who were not yet part of their group. The Christian movement, in the New Testament, is inherently missional, focused on those who are not yet followers. Christian growth, nurture, and fellowship are vital but they happen as we share outreach and they serve to deepen our capacity to go “fishing.”

Gracious God,

Let my focus be on following You toward the needy children who are lost and struggling. Help me trust that I will grow and change on the way.

Amen.
