Divine Imperatives August 21 Devotional

MATTHEW 5:13b | 13b but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

The Christian community is not a separatist cult awaiting transport to a better world. It is designed to be dispersed in all the institutions and areas of our common life, working on behalf of our Lord. Engagement is primary, with all its risks that we will lose our distinctiveness and become just like those we work and live with who are secular in lifestyle and outlook. Salt can lose its flavor in the saltshaker as well as out in the world! Though largely invisible, it changes the character of the substances it is absorbed into in
definite ways.

 

Where are you invisibly at work in this world, advancing Jesus’ cause?

 

 

Gracious God,

Help me to see how I can be at work in the neighborhood, the company, the school, the club, and in all the other groups and settings I inhabit.

Amen.

David Joynt

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
