Divine Imperatives October 23 Devotional

by David Joynt on October 23, 2023

ECCLESIASTES 2:18-19 | 18  I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me — 19 and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.

Death is the ultimate thief, as Solomon recognized. He was a colossal accumulator, infected with lifelong “affluenza.” with hundreds of wives, vast riches, epic residences, and a grandiose reputation for wisdom, Solomon was an expert at earthly glory. Yet he came to realize, toward the end of his life, that just as he entered the world with nothing, so would he exit it. All his houses and possessions would ultimately belong to someone else — stolen by time and death. In this life of recessions and greedy governments and fires and floods, material wealth is insecure. But at the end of this life it literally disappears.

Have you planned for your legacy beyond your natural life?

Gracious God,

Let me always remember I have been blessed in order to be a blessing. Help me to number my days as a gift and opportunity to do so.

Amen.
