Faithful, Faith Knows, Day 23

Faithful, Faith Knows, Day 23

2 CORINTHIANS 10:5 | And every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.

The Christian faith is embedded in a great intellectual tradition, a long conversation and debate that connects deeply with the even larger tradition of Judaism. Christian thinkers have explored the relationship between their beliefs and other faith traditions in what is called “interfaith dialogue,” identifying points of contrast and connection. They have brought biblical and confessional truths into relationship with other intellectual traditions, including Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism, Epicureanism. (And that is just in the first four centuries!). They have wrestled with nihilism, existentialism, naturalism, and various forms of skepticism and deconstruction.

Christians have insisted that Jesus’ Lordship extends to every realm, and so they have explored ways to relate faith to politics, medicine, economics, theories of justice, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. What a fascinating conversation!

What parts of the Christian intellectual tradition interests you?

Do Christians have to be intellectuals?

Thank God for our great tradition.
