Finale Revelation and Imagination Daily Devotional- 42

by David Joynt on July 17, 2021

REVELATION 14:6-7 | Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come; and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

REVELATION 21:1 | 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

Judgement is not an end in itself. That is to say it is not God’s ultimate purpose, but His penultimate one. By judging and defeating and eradicating evil, God makes room for a new heaven and earth. The overarching goal is to create a space for human flourishing a community of joy, peace, and connection. This requires removing the obstacles to such a space and the impediments to such a community. The trauma of Chapters 6-20 leads to the wonder of Chapters 21 and 22.

Has this week helped you focus your thinking about judgement?
