Finale Revelation and Imagination Daily Devotional-21

by David Joynt on June 26, 2021

REVELATION 3:20-21 | 20 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. 21 To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I
myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

LUKE 22:28-30 | 28 “You are those who have stood by me in my trials; 29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Holman Hunt’s famous picture, The Light of the Way, is based on this image. Jesus knocks on the outside of a door which only has an inner handle. Reproof is balanced by invitation. Christ corrects in order to connect in a deeper way with us, for the metaphor of a meal is a picture of intimacy.

Jesus promised His disciples a future role in the final kingdom,  sharing His authority. Paul too could say, “if we endure, we shall also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2:12). Admitting weakness feels weak but not when it creates deeper connections with our Lord and prepares us for a greater calling.
