Growing Joy May 29 Devotional

by David Joynt on May 29, 2023

ACTS 2:2 | And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

Ruach, the Hebrew word for “spirit” also means “wind.” Wind moves invisibly, yet powerfully, and it is wind in the form of breath, that animates our bodies and brings us to life. The church without the Spirit is a dead thing, an institution without life. A church with the Spirit, where the wind fills the house, is an outpost of the kingdom, a place of miracles. The church is meant to be a place where we celebrate the presence and activity of God’s spirit in our midst. Our ultimate unity is not established or maintained by processes or procedures or rituals—it originates and depends on the Spirit.

Breathe deeply for several minutes and pray “veni sanctus spiritus—come Holy Spirit.”

Gracious God,

Come as fire to cleanse me. Come as wind to inspire me.

Amen.
