How Should I Pray, Week 1, Day 5

by David Joynt on August 16, 2018

LUKE 18:1-6

Jesus teaches us to ask, and ask incessantly. He contrasts our praying to his responsive Father, who is eager to bless us, with an unjust judge unwilling to help a poor widow. The judge couldn’t be less like God; he has no fear of the divine and no respect for people. Eventually, this corrupt official gives in to the widow’s request. Why? Her persistence wore him down! We know cases, do we not, where our unwillingness to help is overcome by someone’s perseverance? Will not God, who is committed completely to our salvation and transformation, not be responsive to our requests?

Prayer

Gracious God, How slow I am to pray! How inconsistent! How timid and uncertain! Ignite my passions. Align my desires with your Kingdom. Put me in the flow of your purposes. Let me pray persistently for things that are good and true. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
