But there is far more to our humility than simply a recognition that we are to follow in the steps and take on the mission of Jesus. There is also His example. He did no self-promotion. He exerted no effort at image management. He took terrible and deliberate risks with His reputation by associating with the irreligious and the ungodly and the marginal. As we can see in our passages today and many others in the gospels, this kind of humility went against the grain of expectation for the Messiah and undermined his credibility.
