Real Devotional 14

by David Joynt on May 14, 2022

JAMES 1:11| 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the field; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. It is the same way with the rich; in the midst of a busy life, they will wither away.

This verse sounds like Jesus is anti-wealth. What He opposes is false confidence in the power of our wealth. Wealth creates the illusion of control and we forget that, like flowers, we fade and fall, scorched by circumstance or time.

Have you ever played a board game? I can remember the excitement of getting out the pieces and setting up the board for Monopoly. The game of accumulation was such fun. But at the end, it all went back in the box.

So in life, no hearse is ever seen pulling a U-Haul, no casket has a compartment for cash or jewelry. James wants us to hope and trust in the One who gives a life that overcomes death, which economically speaking, is the great leveler.

Where is your ultimate trust?

How could I tell?
