Soul Songs January 11 Devotional

by David Joynt on January 11, 2024

1 PETER 1:18-19 | 18 You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

“He, to rescue me from danger,

Interposed His precious blood.

Peter reminds his Gentile listeners that their previous religious views and practices were futile. Come Thou Fount is equally direct. Jesus’ work for us on the cross was to rescue us from danger. Jesus’ remarkable teaching anticipates our modern sensibilities, our issues like our attitudes to the disabled or the excluded, while also transcending and contradicting them, especially on our ability to find our own way toward holiness, goodness, and true life. For Him, our brokenness cannot be overcome except by a radical act of divine sacrifice and suffering. We cannot manage our own salvation. To pretend we can is dangerous and futile.

Saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Do you agree?

Gracious God,

Thank you for solving problems we could never solve, healing wounds we couldn’t heal, opening doors forever shut. Thank you for the Blood of the Lamb.

Amen.
