Soul Songs January 22 Devotional

by David Joynt on January 22, 2024

Psalm 8:3-4 | When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; 4 what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?

Psalm 19:1 | The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

“O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the works Thy hands hath made,

I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed”

The ancients were fascinated with the heavens, charting stars and planets, and imagining connections between their patterns and human history. But they had no way to probe space and no physics or cosmology to grasp the actual scale and character of our universe. If a grain of sand was equal to an entire star, all the grains of sand on all the beaches and deserts in the world would not equal the number of suns in the universe! The complexity and mystery of Creation with anti-matter and black holes and quarks, and the level of order with more than 30 highly specific constants, inspires awe at the sheer power and genius of our Creator.

Do you ever share the psalmists question?

Gracious God,

The more we discover of our creation the more awe and wonder we feel. Thank you for giving us minds to know and tools to explore what you have made.

Amen.
