Soul Songs January 27 Devotional

JOHN 14:1-3 | 1 Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

“And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!

Then I shall bow in humble adoration,

And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!”

We noted earlier this week that How Great Thou Art hints at both nature’s vast and imposing complexity and its inspiring, intimate beauty. The final verse has a similar contrast. On the one hand the universal, cosmic culminating event of Jesus’ return. On the other, the intimate image of “going home.” The movement from earth to heaven, from life now to life eternal is not a wrenching change, but a movement from a temporary home to a permanent and more lovely one. What is both familiar and good is made complete. Faith becomes sight, love knows no barriers, truth is uncorrupted by error, goodness not diluted by evil.

Imagine your greatest ever home, only better. Picture your deepest relationships, only deeper.

Gracious God,

Thank you that our cosmic hope, our faith in your return, has an intimate and personal side — we go home.

Amen.
