Soul Songs January 29 Devotional

by David Joynt on January 29, 2024

MATTHEW 6:13 | 13  And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.

“For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe;

His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate

On earth is not his equal.”

Luther, like Jesus and Peter, was a realist about evil. We have a deadly foe, an implacable enemy, who wants to separate us from God, undermine our confidence, impede our capacity to think and love, and draw us toward narcissism, pride, and death. He is subtle, using good things, like pleasure or ambition, to steer us away from the best things, like service and sacrifice. He is the enemy of the good within us and in our world. The disciples’ prayer asks for delivery from his malign influence.

Are you a realist about evil?

Gracious God,

Reinforce my realism about evil and temptation. Help me recognize temptation and overcome it, abiding in your presence, and trusting in your guidance.

Amen.
