Stress Test Devotional April 17

by David Joynt on April 17, 2024

MATTHEW 6:26, 28-31 | 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

28 And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’

Jesus uses a comparison to help us trust in God’s provision and care. It is a comparison that moves from lesser to greater. Birds are not farmers, yet they eat and live. Lilies cannot shop online or at the Scottsdale mall, and yet they exceed the vain Solomon in all his finery.

Remember where you rank in God’s list of favorite things: at the top. You are the crown of creation, the divine masterpiece. Jesus was born for you, loved and taught for you, suffered and died for you, rose and reigns for you, and He prays for you. God knows what you and I need, now and forever.

Take the final paragraph and read it aloud, inserting “I” and “me.”

Gracious God,

Help me to remember who I am and to whom I belong. I am a son or daughter of the everlasting King.

Amen.
