As focused as John was on Jesus, seeing him in all his depth and
glory, he was also focused on other people. John gives us the
most extended dialogues between Jesus and people who
encounter and question him. Nicodemus, the Jewish leader in
Chapter 3, the women at the well in Chapter 4, Mary and
Martha in Chapter 11—in all these cases we get to see human
characters portrayed and revealed. Understanding others is the
first crucial step to helping them onward.
