The Originals, Week 4, Day 5

PSALM 51:1-5

Matthew made a disgraceful choice to become a wealthy betrayer.
But once he had done this, it became difficult to turn around and
go in a better direction. Another element in understanding
difficult people is seeing that negative behavior can be self-
reinforcing. Tax collecting furthers social isolation and creates a
reputation that feels impossible to change. Matthew must have
believed his image was beyond recovery. When we embrace a
habit or activity we know is wrong, then we begin to define
ourselves as wrongdoers and lose sight of our best selves. Jesus'
interest in Matthew and his call cut across this sense that he was
fundamentally trapped and unsalvageable.

Psalm 51 expresses despair with sin and hope for forgiveness.

Do you know anyone who has given up on his or her "best self?'

What might change their mindset?
