The Other Jesus, Part 2, Week 2, Day 6

 LUKE 9:61

“Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me say farewell to those at my home.”

Once I was included in a sailing rescue. Our boat had turned over in a high wind and left us clinging on and hoping for rescue. A motorboat came toward us and offered us a lift to shore. In order to get to safety, we had to let go of our boat and swim to the rescue craft. We had to let go before we could be saved. Commitment to Christ always means letting go of some old patterns, old thoughts, and old relationships. If we bear grudges, we have to say goodbye to this habit and hello to forgiveness. If we hold tight to resources, we must say goodbye to greed and insecurity and embrace sharing and generosity. If we have patterns of fear and anxiety, we must let them go to make room for courage and calm.

PRAYER

Gracious God, Let me say goodbye to the things in my life that hold back my growth in you. May I break the patterns that are unproductive, reject the thoughts that are negative, and forego the words that are critical and mean. Give me the strength to end unhealthy relationships and build new and strong ones. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
