This verse really names our cultural disease. We have become a nation of people determined to exalt themselves at every opportunity. We’ve turned boasting into an art form and called it “building your brand,” or “marketing your story.” Social media promotes edited versions of our lives with the prayers of confession left completely out.
Public figures, athletes, and musicians offer us a relentless picture of self-promotion, self-assertion, and self-aggrandizement. But this behavior, Jesus insists, is anathema to God and will result in an eventual humbling. Only humble people can hope to be accepted and lifted up by God.
Pray for a greater humility in our culture and nation.
