The Week That Changed The World Devotional March 11

MARK 14:2 | 2 for they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.”

Conspiracies work by hiding or obscuring motives and actors who believe honesty would undermine their goals. The Pharisees and chief priests have not endorsed Jesus as Messiah, but nor have they officially opposed Him. This was a craven abrogation of their duties as the theological experts of Israel. They know His teaching and miracles and had argued with Him, yet they did not render a public verdict. This was because they feared the public reaction. They needed to arrest and try Him secretly, gain a guilty verdict, and let the Romans take the blame for a death sentence. This meant nabbing Him in a secret place and remote location, away from scrutiny. They needed a close associate of His to relay the information necessary for this clandestine move.

 

Has anyone ever tried to enlist you in a plot?

 

 

Gracious God,

Nothing is hidden from You! You see all our actions and know our thoughts. Help us remember that no deed is really secret.

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
