The Week That Changed The World Devotional March 27

by David Joynt on March 27, 2024

MARK 11:9-10 | 9 Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

As Jesus rides into the city, He is greeted with royal words and gestures. Cloaks are spread when kings arise. Palms are raised to evoke Judas Macabaeus, Zion of the Hasmonean/Maccabean family who defeated the Syrian Antiochus Epiphanes, and then cleansed and rebuilt the Temple. His family then ruled in Jerusalem as a priest/kings for a hundred years. The crowds quote Psalm 118:25-26 and insert a phrase about the kingdom of David. Hosanna means, “save us.”

There is irony here. Jesus is a king, He is in the line of David, He does come in God’s name and with His authority, and He will bring salvation. But He is a servant king, and unlike David and Judas Macabeaus, He brings salvation from our sin, brokenness, and death, not political freedom.

What do people most need saving from?

Gracious God,
You save us from sin and evil and their consequence, death. You save us for life and for freedom, joy, love, and service. Hallelujah!
Amen.
