The Week That Changed the World Devotional March 4

by David Joynt on March 04, 2024

MARK 14:4-5 | But some were there who said to one another in anger, “Why was the ointment wasted in this way? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her.

Money and resources are fungible. They can be used in so many ways. They can be traded for goods or services. They can be spent on education or entertainment. They can be invested to yield a return. They can be saved. They can be given away in the form of a gift that sustains or blesses someone. The nard used to anoint Jesus was costly. A denarius was a days wage, so 300 would be a year’s average income.

Onlookers object to the seeming extravagance, pointing out other alternative ways the resource might have been deployed to alleviate poverty. We are all charged with being stewards of the resources we control and a certain pragmatism is usually wise in the ways we allocate things. “What strategy will yield the biggest impact that aligns with kingdom values?” —this is a legitimate question.

Are you a wise investor of resources for God’s purposes?

Gracious God,

Give me the spirit of generosity to share and the spirit of wisdom to do so wisely.

Amen.
