ACTS 11:19-21 | 19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, and they spoke the word to no one except Jews. 20 But among them were some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists also,  proclaiming the Lord Jesus. 21 The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number became believers and turned to the Lord.

Jewish separatist tendencies were also challenged providentially. The martyrdom of Stephen was followed by a Jewish persecution of Jesus’ followers and some were scattered to Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch. Whilst sharing the gospel primarily with Jews in these new locations, they had conversations with Greeks who were converted. Within the providence and plan of God, the terrible loss of Stephen sent unintended missionaries beyond Jewish territory and Gentiles found faith. Suddenly, the church was confronted with eager and excited non-Jewish believers.

When has God’s providence surprised you?

When has God used a terrible event for a good purpose?
