World Changing Words Devotional-Day 36

JOEL 1:1-4 |1 The word of the Lord that came to Joel son of Pethuel: Hear this, O elders, give ear, all inhabitants of the land! Has such a thing happened in your days, or in the days of your ancestors? Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the swarming locust left, the hopping locust has eaten, and what the hopping locust left, the destroying locust has eaten.

The prophet Joel wonders whether anything as awful as a plague of locusts has ever happened before. (A plague so destructive that locusts cut, swarmed, hopped and destroyed on a comprehensive and monumental scale.) The answer of course is: “Yes!” Exodus
10:1-20 describes the devastation wrought upon Egyptian farms until “not a green thing remained.” What is shocking to Joel is that the plague of locusts comes as a judgement against Israel and not against her foes.

No group is exempt from the judgement of God.

 Read the Exodus account.

Why do you think Joel talks about the locust plague? What is it a metaphor for or a sign of?
