Having restored Paul's credibility, Barnabas also accompanied
him on the very first missionary journey. Jesus had set the pattern
in the Gospel of disciples going out in pairs. There are practical
reasons for this—if one is sick for instance, the other can pick up
the physical or emotional slack. With missionary pairs, there are
two perspectives on every problem, two people to share the
Gospel, two to fend off danger, two to celebrate success.
Barnabas was Paul's partner in this first venture in what we call
evangelism and church planting. There were no blueprints and no
manuals for the journey, but there was a great friendship and a
