Everyday Saints Devotional 4

by David Joynt on January 05, 2022

DEUTERONOMY 6:12 | 12 take care that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

DEUTERONOMY 6:20-23 | 20 When your children ask you in time to come, "What is the meaning of the decrees and the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord our God has commanded you?" 21 then you shall say to your children, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 The Lord displayed before our eyes great and awesome signs and wonders against Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his household. 23 He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land that he promised on oath to our ancestors.

When we fail to practice gratitude then we disconnect from the blessings of our past, and these blessings cease to shape our experience in the present. But even worse we will lose our living connection to God himself! The God of the Bible is identified as the one who has acted to heal and save. We know him truly as the redeemer of Israel from slavery and humankind from sin. He is not the God of the philosophers, known through a set of attributes.

To know God truly we must recall how he has blessed, encouraged, nurtured, forgiven, corrected, and freed us!

Use the last sentence of today’s meditation to do some grateful remembering.

How has God blessed, encouraged, nurtured, forgiven, corrected, and freed you?
