Faithful: Faith Shares, Day 17

MARK 12:41-44 |  He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

LUKE 11:3 | Give us each day our daily bread.

Acts of generosity are “faith-full” in a second sense. They all include letting go of something. When we invest time in another person, those moments are gone. When we give dollars away, they are no longer ours and cannot be used to provide for our own comfort or security. In an unpredictable world, where stock markets crash and circumstances change, our willingness to share reflects our faith that God will provide for us and that he will honor our generosity in heaven. The widow with the copper coin is an example of such faith.

Generosity tests where our security really rests. How secure is your faith in our heavenly Father?

Meditate on today’s petition from the Lord’s Prayer.
