Questions Week 13, Day 1

by David Joynt on July 22, 2017

WEEK 5

IS THE GOD OF THE

OLD TESTAMENT THE SAME

AS THE GOD OF THE

NEW TESTAMENT?

PSALM 143:12

LUKE 6:27

Marcion of Sinope, who lived in Rome in the middle of the 2nd Century AD, believed that Jesus was the true Son of God, but he rejected the Hebrew Bible and the God of Israel. Marcionism, a theological movement named for its founder, contrasted the wrathful O.T. God with the forgiving N.T. one, and wanted to eliminate everything Jewish from the Bible. The theologian Tertullian wrote against this viewpoint and eventually it was identified as a heresy. Yet as a pastor, I frequently encounter similar perspectives from believers who find parts of the Old Testament difficult to square with the tenor of Jesus’ teaching.

When you think of the relationship of the Old Testament and the New Testament, do you think of contrast or continuity?

Contrast our two verses today.
