Seven Last Words Daily Devotional -24

by David Joynt on March 12, 2021

HEBREWS 4:14-15  14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.

HEBREWS 7:23-25 | 23 Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

The cross was an event in human history, but it was also an event in the life of God. The experience of Jesus, His suffering, and abandonment, is now part of the divine biography and it exists within the heart of God.

The God of scripture is not caught or imprisoned by His divinity. He need not stay unsullied, perfect, beyond suffering and sorrow. He has the freedom to enter in—even to enter the dark and broken aspects of the world He creates and rules. Jesus’ cry from the cross changed the way we think about God.

God’s power is made perfect in voluntary weakness, His glory in the shame of the cross, His rule in subjection, His victory in loss and death.

Authentic Christian theology must be a theology of the cross, not a theology of glory. Do you agree?
