Soul Songs February 16 Devotional

by David Joynt on February 16, 2024

MATTHEW 5:4 | Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Horatio Spafford turned his great grief and terrible loss into a hymn of faith. This hymn, in turn, has comforted many, many people in the midst of their losses. This helps us understand one of the blessings in grief and mourning.

Grief tunes our hearts to other’s suffering and sorrow. It allows us to come alongside others and accompany them. As we comfort, we are comforted. We can be instruments of grace, as Horatio was, and find our own reassurance through our connection to someone else’s pain or questions. When sorrow does not change into anger or unbelief or perpetual depression, there is a victory and an opportunity to bless others.

When have you sought to comfort someone in a loss?

Gracious God,

Tune my heart to the suffering and struggle of others. Turn my pain into empathy and greater faith in Your power over life and death.

Amen.
