Soul Songs January 10 Devotional

by David Joynt on January 10, 2024

EPHESIANS 2:12 | 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

“Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wandering from the folds of God.”

Jesus’ most succinct explanation of his life mission was this, “I come to seek and save the lost.” The God he describes and embodies is a seeking God, finding his distressed and struggling children and inviting them into life and relationship. Come Thou Fount echoes this reality in a personal way. In reality everyone outside of Israel’s covenants were effectively strangers, until Jesus opened up the promises of God to anyone that has faith in him. But our own stories of distance from God vary with time and individual factors. Most of us have periods of wandering away, like sheep from the flock, caught up in distractions, difficulties, or doubts. Fortunately God seeks wanderers.

When have you wandered away from the flock?

Gracious God,

Bring me home when I wander, call my name. I want to be a friend and disciple, not a stranger.

Amen.
