Stress Test Devotional April 28

DEUTERONOMY 6:6-9 | Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

We all get amnesia! I don’t mean we all suffer a cranial blow and lose our memory of our identity. I do mean we easily forget our spiritual identity, our commitment to and dependence on God.

Moses speaks to the nation of Israel before they enter Canaan, the promise land. Deuteronomy is his sermon and one key emphasis is on the practices of recalling their identity, and remembering their history. We know we are products of the past, but we live in the present and recalling the previous is often hard. So he takes a common sense approach. For adults in Israel the number one task was forming a new generation, who had not experienced slavery or liberation or the Exodus wanderings. In teaching rising generations, existing ones were always reminded of their spiritual journey. The task of remembering was to be a daily one, along with the teaching.

Do you ever get spiritual amnesia?

Gracious God,

Help me to help others know the story of Your goodness and grace. May I be a disciple who remembers, every day.

Amen.
