The Week That Changed The World Devotional March 10

MARK 14:1 | 1 It was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

Conspiracy theories seem to be everywhere and many of them are baseless interpretations of events. But such theories exist because there are real conspiracies. Our scripture lesson portrays one. The religious leaders of Israel have determined that Jesus is a false Messiah. We cannot know their exact reasoning because they don’t share it when they come to accuse Him of rebellion against Rome. Such a change was of course a reverse distortion—His refusal of violent revolution disappointed many who expected it of the Messiah. Perhaps it was His outreach to non-Jews and to marginal people, or perhaps His criticism of their leadership, or His claims of authority over the Temple and divine sonship. Maybe it was jealousy over His miracles.

Has anyone ever plotted against you?

Gracious God,

May we avoid the clandestine and secret ways people manipulate and coerce. Give us transparency and honesty.

Amen.
