The Week That Changed The World Devotional March 13

by David Joynt on March 13, 2024

JOHN 12:4-6 | But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money    given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.)

One possible motive for Judas’ betrayal was greed. Greed is the    other side of desire, or perhaps, desire unfettered. John thinks Judas used his position as the disciples treasurer to skim a profit from the common purse. He attributed Judas’ opposition to Jesus’ anointing to disappointment that the nard wasn’t turned into cash, from which he might have made more illicit gain. We want money for many reasons: to buy a particular thing, to elevate our lifestyle, to attain security, to join a particular circle, to garner respect from those who value success, or even to help or bless someone else.

If you have financial desires, what motivates them?

Gracious God,

Save me from unfettered desire. Make my many motivations worthy of Your name.

Amen.
