The Week That Changed The World Devotional March 14

by David Joynt on March 14, 2024

MATTHEW 5:9-10, 39 | Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the    kingdom of heaven.

39 But I say to you: Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also,

Another possible motive for Judas’ betrayal was disappointment. Many people were attracted to Jesus because of His power. His teaching was powerful, in debates He prevailed. His healings and exorcisms showed power over disease and evil. Judas saw the calming of the sea and His power over nature, as well as the raising of Lazarus, demonstrating authority over death itself. But Jesus    refused to use His power coercively. He greatly disappointed those who wanted a political Messiah, a warrior king, who would liberate Israel from Rome. Teaching enemy love and peacemaking, Jesus overcame evil with good. Judas may have been disappointed with Jesus’ ethics and strategy, wanting liberation and revolution.

Has God ever disappointed you?

Do Jesus’ ethics appeal to you?

Gracious God,

May I not seek good ends by unholy means. Help me respond to evil with good. I ask in Your name.

Amen.
