The Week That Changed The World Devotional March 23

March 23, 2024

MARK 14:29-31 | 29 Peter said to him, “Even though all fall away, I will not.” 30 Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But he said vehemently, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And all of them said the same.

Facing our own fallibility takes courage. Daily confession and the rituals of worship and sacrament are useful reminders. But often it is hard to imagine ourselves making a total mess of things, or acting contrary to our genuine values and loyalties. Peter did not lack courage! He had left his boats, family, and profession to follow Jesus. He had been there during confrontations with leaders, exorcisms, and seen angry crowds. He had done front line ministry and knew some rejection. He walked on water. In his mind it was impossible that he would let Jesus down in the end. Yet he did. Everyone, in the right circumstances, can yield to the evil one. Overconfidence, public or private, is always unwise for a disciple.

Have you had vulnerable times? What sustained you?

Have you had to recover from failure?

Gracious God,

May I be confident in You but aware of my own fallibility. Help me discern vulnerable times and seek support.

Amen.
