Under Construction, Week 3, Day 20

SEE JOSHUA 2:1-21

JOSHUA 6:17 | The city and all that is in it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live because she hid the messengers we sent.

JOSHUA 6:22-23 | Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the prostitute's house, and bring the woman out of it and all who belong to her, as you swore to her." So the young men who had been spies went in and brought Rahab out, along with her father, her mother, her brothers, and all who belonged to her—they brought all her kindred out—and set them outside the camp of Israel.

MATTHEW 1:5 | And Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse.

Rahab the prostitute shelters spies from Israel, foresees the victory of God, and risks her life for their lives.  She and her family are spared from the destruction.

What an unlikely heroine!  A foreign women of dubious morals.  So many verses are given over to her story and her unexpected faith and courage.   But you could almost miss her name in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel.  Patrimony meant lineage came via the father and yet Rahab, along with three other women, get mentioned in the line of the Savior.  All unexpected, all compromised from a first century perspective.  The grace Jesus displayed to women and Gentiles was evident even in his family tree.

Can you find the other three women?

When have you been given unexpected help?
