World Changing Words Devotional - Day 14

by David Joynt on August 15, 2020

ISAIAH 58:10-11 | 10 if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. 11 The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

The words of the prophet in Isaiah 58 were world-shaping because they made a radical claim about God’s heart and values. The God of Israel was not an instrumental pragmatist, satisfied with incremental improvements to the general welfare. Nor was He a utilitarian, aiming at the greatest good for the greatest number. He judged Israel on her concrete level of concern and care for the needy and afflicted, the poor and the vulnerable.

How is Isaiah’s vision picked up in the life and teaching of Jesus?
