Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
Luke 15:1-7
A few years back I lost a special ring. It was a ring that my wife bought me on our first mission trip to the Yucatan after we got married. This ring was my travel wedding ring—not as significant as the wedding band we exchanged during our wedding, but very important for other reasons. I remember searching everywhere for it. More than the time I spent searching for it, I remember the emotions I experienced over it being lost.
We know the great effort and distance that God went to search for us; from heaven to earth. We know the great emotion and effort God went through to find us; the cross. We know the great victory and party God shares with us; the resurrection and ascension. God came to eat with sinners and share a heavenly party with those who accept the invitation.
When was a time you lost something?
For you, is this a season of being lost? Found? Searching?
