Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home.
Luke 15:3-6
In this parable we find a sheep that has left the shepherd. I often wonder why the sheep would leave the shepherd, and my best guess is that it didn’t even know what it was doing. The sheep found itself in a place of needing rescue and the shepherd risks everything to save it. There are times in our lives when we find ourselves in places or situations we never thought or wanted. This happens when we, like the sheep, take our eyes off of the Good Shepherd.
The shepherd would lay his life down for the sheep. In the evening when the sheep were penned up, the shepherd would lay down at the entrance to keep the sheep in and literally put his life on the line to keep the predators out. David self-reports to Saul that he killed both a lion and a bear to protect his flock. Being a shepherd was a dangerous profession, and they would risk their life to keep their sheep safe.
How do you keep your eyes on the Shepherd?
How do you feel about the great lengths God goes through to be with you?
